Pickleball 101: A Beginner’s Guide to the Basics

Pickleball is one of the fastest-growing sports in the world, and for good reason! It’s fun, social, and easy to learn—making it perfect for all ages and skill levels. If you’re new to the game, here’s a quick guide to get you started.

The Basics

Pickleball is played on a court similar in size to a badminton court, using a paddle and a perforated plastic ball. You can play singles (one-on-one) or doubles (two-on-two), with the goal of scoring points by hitting the ball over the net in a way that your opponent can't return it.

Serving & Scoring

  • The game starts with an underhand serve that must land in the diagonal service box.

  • Only the serving team can score points.

  • Games are usually played to 11 points, and you must win by at least two points.

The “Kitchen” Rule

One of the unique aspects of pickleball is the “non-volley zone” (aka the kitchen), a seven-foot area near the net where players cannot hit the ball out of the air. This rule prevents overly aggressive net play and keeps the game balanced.

Why Play Indoors?

Indoor pickleball is great because it eliminates weather-related interruptions, offers a consistent playing surface, and is easier on the joints. Many community centers and sports clubs now have dedicated courts, making it easier than ever to jump into the game!

If you’re ready to play, grab a paddle and hit the court—pickleball is easy to learn but endlessly fun to master!
